I always try to see a museum of some sort when I come to the UK and a relative told me about this one. Tucked away in Blandford Forum at the HQ of the Royal Signals Regiment is a gem of museum relating to those folk in the Army who are responsible for the communications systems. It starts with fire beacons and progresses to the Internet via telegraph, phone, radio, satellite and computer networks. Fortunately for me there are also a ton of motorcycles and even one Willys MB Jeep. It has a lovely little cafe on site with delicious home baked cake, great tea and friendly staff. We were there for a couple of hours and it would easily bear a second visit. It is on an Army base so I would advise you to bring a passport for ID.
Great place to visit, the history of the regiment from day 1. Lots of interesting exhibits and easy to read information boards or videos give all the detail. The on site cafe has a great breakfast selection that has to be recomended.
Amazingly interesting and alot bigger than I thought it would be, loved looking back at all the technologies of the past, the kids had a quiz to follow around the site and the cafe was fantastic, delicious and very good for the price
Do not drive up to the barrier, park on the right and walk to the barrier and into the Guard Room. You will be issued with a personal pass and a vehicle pass. Only one person needs to do this. Once passes are issued you will be able to return to your vehicle and be allowed entry.
Museum has a lot of interesting displays and information in quite a small area. Cafe is compact, staff are very nice, BLT was good 😋 coffee not so good.
Really great history of the Royal Signals from Napoleonic to present day, the WW1 and 2 areas are especially good, but the newer areas are confused and not to the same standard. History of the dispatch riders, their bikes and the display team also really good. Lots of great old machines to see. Good cafe too, and super friendly staff. Shame it's in the army base though as it's a bit of a faff to register and get a pass, would be much better if it could be done in advance online like they do abroad, but still worth the effort. Allow 2 to 3 hours to see it all, plus half an hour to get in!
Great museum, alot to look at. Will come back again.
Very enjoyable and interesting but there is a lot to take in so you will need the time to do it
Very interesting museum lots of information about the equipment and the Royal Signals. Extensive display of medals to ex service personnel. Access to most areas for those with a pram or wheelchair. Little cafe that provides snacks and drinks and a gift shop. Staff very friendly and approachable
